Club Brugge vs Toulouse FC
Ivan Perišić headed in a free kick in the fourth minute of added time to earn Club Brugge their first point in their Europa League campaign.
Perišić started the match for his Belgium side and also received a yellow card in the final minute of play. The draw puts Club Brugge in third place of Group J, trailing first place Shakhtar and Toulouse FC but leading pointless Partizan.
Villarreal CF vs Red Bull Salzburg
Nikola Pokrivač played the entire match against Villarreal CF as Red Bull Salzburg earned a 2-0 victory. Overall, it was a slow day individually for Pokrivač, who did not make an impact on the score sheet. The Austrian outfit now lead group G in the UEFA Europa League.
Panathinaikos FC v. FC Dinamo 1948 Bucharest
Panathinaikos FC defeated FC Dinamo 1948 Bucharest 1-0 today in the Romanian capital city. Ante Rukavina finally made his return to the Panathinaikos lineup today, coming into the game in the in the 67' for Dimitris Salpigidis and providing key support needed for the game winning goal. Rukavina was able to hold off a Dinamo defender long enough to set up a pass for Panathinaikos teammate Dimitrios Karagounis to fire a low trajectory shot through multiple defenders into the bottom left corner of the net.
It is a positive sign to see Panathinaikos manager Henk ten Cate have enough confidence in Rukavina to place the youngster on the roster (and eventually, the field) for such an important match having just recovered from an injury. Panathinaikos FC are tied for second place in group F with Dinamo Bucharest.
Mario Galinović was not included in the Panathinaikos roster today.
Genoa vs. Valencia
Croatian international, Ivan Jurić was not featured today in Europa Liga and will be out of action for Genoa and Croatia for the next two weeks. Genoa stumbled today 3-2 at Valencia and have lost three out of four matches since Ivan went out due to injury.
Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Partizan Belgrade
Shakhtar Donetsk put on another brilliant Europa League performance, dominating visiting Partizan Belgrade in a 4-1 romp in front of energetic crowd of 49,000 at RSK Olympyiskyi stadium. Captain Dario Srna started for Shakhtar and had two shots on goal before being subbed out in the 75th minute of play. The result leaves Shakhtar top of the standings with two wins from two.
Dario Srna after the match:
Darijo, we congratulate you on a win! Why has Shakhtar conceded a goal?
"We were winning 4-0. On Sunday we have a very important game against Dnipro, where we have to gain three points. Every three day Shakhtar plays very important matches. We have to win in the Championship, in the UEFA Europa League and in Ukrainian Cup as well. That is why Mister made three substitutions. I would say that we can play without these players. We just relaxed in the dying minutes of game. But more important we could gain three points tonight."
Now four goals at Donbas Arena is a good tradition, isn’t it?
"I do not know. I hope we proceed in such way further. I would like to thank our fans for coming out. There was an overcrowded stadium."
Why has the coach replaced you today?
"It was my request. We have an important clash on Sunday."
Hamburg vs. Hapoel Tel Aviv
Hamburg made up for last month's Liga Europa slip up in Vienna by thumping Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC 4-2 in front of 30,000 home fans at the Hamburg Arena. Mladen Petrić started and played 83 minutes, leaving with an assist and only one shot on goal.
Rapid Vienna v. Celtic FC
Nikica Jelavić scored a pivotal goal in the 4' today against Celtic FC in Glasgow in Group C action. The match ended in a 1-1 draw but Rapid Vienna now sit atop Group C thanks in large part to some key goals by Jelavić during this European campaign.
Jelavić began the match with an early challenge and chance on goal by heading a ball in which Artur Boruc of Celtic FC managed to save. However, two minutes later, Jelavić rifled a shot in off a through-ball by teammate Steffen Hoffman. Jelavić played the entire match for Rapid Vienna, continuing to remain a staple in the lineup of the Austrian outfit this season.
***Jelavić Receives NT Call-Up***
It was also announced today that Nikica Jelavić will be on Croatia's roster for its upcoming World Cup qualifier away at Kazakhstan. Although he has displayed some very underwhelming performances in Austrian Bundesliga games this season, Jelavić has performed consistently in UEFA Europa League contests. With Eduardo picking up an injury this week, the Čapljina native has sparked enough interest from Slaven Bilić's and the HNS to make the trip to Kazakhstan.
So, Jelavić's team call-up: Premature and rushed, or timely and deserved?

Good shit Darijo Srna, beating Partizan 4-1. The Grobari can dig a grave for themselves!! haha
I watched some clips of Jelavic on youtube his style of play reminds me of Alen Boksic bit. Not saying he's the next Boksic or anything. But I like the call up we should seriously consider Mario Gavranovic from Neuchatel Xanax in the Swiss Super League. 8 games 6 goals nice strikes too. Also Matej Delac is out with mononucleosis yeah the shit that got the best of Mario Ancic and has affected Roger Federer alot in my opinion. So with Runje under performing and telling his coaches at Lens they should bench him a call-up and start from Mario Galinovic would be nice paging Slaven Bilic CALL HIM UP AND GIVE HIM A CHANCE ALREADY! As for England I'm interested to see who gets called-up for Ukraine and who plays very interesting to see if they believe in "Fair Play" or not.
I don't agree with Jelavic's call up as he plays with a club who cannot afford to buy Rukavina, Budan, Kalinic, Keric or even that could tempt Bjelanovic out of Italy. That means he has a head start over the others as he's competing with lesser players and playing in a easier league. Also how can he be ahead of Mate Bilic. You can directly compare the two in Hajduk and Rapid and Bilic is better.
Jelavic is living off a few goals in Europe. Its definitely too soon. We arguably only select Mandzo cos he's a young forward and cos of his size, but we don't want another one in there otherwise it decreases quality of strikeforce. Also we are now mainly dependent on Petric and Olic. Mandzo is tired and Klasnic is not a 90 minutes international player no more.
You also wander why does Jelavic make an impression and yet Perisic is doing similarly and can't get in under 21 side. The jersey should have gone to Mate Bilic end of story. But i'm willing to sit back and give this low scoring Austrian league player a chance against Qatar. Manuel Pamic also should have been called up as Cale is not 100% fit.
Are we ever gonna see Ilicevic, Dujmovic, Badelj, Bilic, Gabric play some minutes cos they deserve it now. Babic, Perisic, Budan, Vucko, Kalinic and Rukavina should wait a little bit longer to see they're longer term form.
Regards keepers Subasic should be first choice now. Runje on bench with Ivesa.
Regards Mario Gavranovic i think Croatia may have their work cut out trying to call him up cos he's already in the Swiss Under 21 team. You might find he makes the next Switzerland squad. If you were Gavranovic and you had to compete with Eduardo, Olic, Petric, Klasnic, Budan, Bilic, Mando, Kalinic, Ruki or with Switzerland's strikeforce then you'd prob go for Switzerland. Maybe it would do no harm in HNS going out and visiting the kid to see what his thoughts, but i doubt Bilic is aware of him, Ladic clearly isn't. From his point of view he should play for Switzerland. Next two or three matches he'll prob be in their squad.
Don't worry you guys, if things go the way I think they may go, it will be awhile before you see Partizan, REd Star or any Serbian supporters group in Europe again.
Some members of the Grobari beat some Toulouse fan to death.

Jelavic is doing very well. He's playing in a league that has shown to be better than the HNL (ie Red Bull beating Dinamo Zagreb). I think this will bring some energy to the midfield. Great call by Bilic.
why are people still insisting on calling Mario Galinovic, Hes on the bench now for his team, he had a 'decent' run last year but not in form anymore, Subabsic ahead of him
With all due respect Slaven, Jelavic did nothing in HNL1 as well. He's done nothing in Austria so far either. With only 2 goals in 8 games so far this season he's hardly wrecking the league. If you'd like to see the hideous truth of Nikica Jelavic's career here it is..
2006/ 07 Hajduk 5 goals in 17 appearences
2007/ 08 Zaragem 3 goals in 23 appearences
2008/ 09 Rapid 7 in 34 appearences
2009/ 10 Rapid 2 in 8 appearences.
In Europa liga he seems to be starring. He's scoring 7 in 8 appearences at Rapid over two season. That's good, but it disguises what he is really like. Look at his league form to identify how good this guy is. He's average at best.
In The midfield - Jelavic - oh if i hear another player being mentioned out of position my head will explode.
I'll give Jelavic a chance and will see what he does. The only thing i like about him is he is young and hungry. But i could say that about Ilija Sivonjic, but it don't mean he should play for Croatia.
If we go by goals per game then Klasnic should be in the line up, as he averages a goal every 3 NT games. I don't think Jelavic will be starting anyway. Petric will likely replace Dudu.
Fvck me, 148 Croatian fans have been detained in Timisoara. Was that really neccessary?
http://www.croatiantimes.com/news/Sports/2009-10-02/6321/Dozens_of_Croatian_football_fans_detained_in_Timisoara#
Yes Slaven your prob right Klasnic prob should be in Croatia's line up for next match. But we've gotta treat him with care as he's the only known footballer to come back from a kidney transplant. If someone said to me Klasnic starts against Kazakstan i'd say fair enough. I mean he won the last Andorra match for us single handedly so i don't doubt for a minute he can't bury Kazakstan. I have nothing against Ivan Klasnic. He's a top striker. I think his bad days are behind him, but thats no fault of his own. But he can definitely put Kazakstan to bed.
Honestly, I would have rather seen 4-6 prospects called ahead of Jelavic. that being said, this is a guy that has intrigued me for some time. I have heard the constant Boksic comparisons. @ Vinko Mustapic - You are correct. The style between the two cannot be ignored. I will say this though, A) Perhaps we cannot look at his striking rate alone. Yes, some will laugh and say, well, isnt that how we judge strikers? Nobody on this site, me included has seen more than 4 of his live games in the past 4 years. If you say that you have watched 4 live Rapid Vienna games I will have to call you a liar, assuming that you do not live in Vienna and have season tickets. What I am trying to say is, perhaps he brings other intangibles with him. Yeah, i know I will get blasted for that. I will also say this,
I HAVE NOT AGREED WITH MANY OF THE MOVES SLAVEN BILIC HAS MADE SINCE EURO 2008.
Okay, that being said, yes, I agree with people like DinamoFan and Ziva Istina. It seems something else is being looked at when some of these guys are getting called up. We cannot ignore the pattern with some of these call ups and then the fact they are completely ignored once they get their move away from the HNL. Its done, the guy has been called up, lets just try and keep an open mind and see if the guy does bring something new and fresh to the National Team. In all likelihood he will not be on the bench. DinamoFan, my friend, you need to calm down a bit. I am not happy with it as well, trust me, you know I have been talking up Ilicevic, Perisic and Rukavina for a long time. Slaven Bilic is going to give you a heart attack at this rate.
I'm calm.. stress balls on standby.
*****UPDATE********
I just updated this post with three videos.
1) Jelavic goal
2) Hamburg interactive video from Bild.de.... no Petric, but very interesting
3) Perisic equalizer. Great running header, however, where is the marking? Either way, a goal is a goal, boosts confidence.
@ DinamoFan - I know you live in England. I do now know who you support in the EPL. However, curious if you have been following the story of Kevin Keegan whining his case against Newcastle for constructive dismissal? Apparently Newcastle wanted him to Ignacio Gonzalez as a favor to two South American agents. Apparently, all Keegan had to look at was a Youtube clip that shows the same two goals from like 10 different angles. Haha, perhaps Bilic may have found the perfect club for himself to coach?
winning, sorry
These comparison to Boskic are insane. Anytime a tall stricker shows up at hajduk the comparison start right away. Same thing happens at Dinamo a midfielder shows up and they beign comparing him to Boban.
The jelavic move is puzzling to me, but I doubt the guy gets any time against Kazak.
Newcastle were horribly mismanaged for years. I've never heard of a club which is financially rich and not in need to sell players that gets relegated. Owner Mike Ashley did everything wrong including appointing Joe Kinnear when he was off work for years after a heart attack and then they bring him in and guess what he has another heart attack.. In England there was two or three partnerships where the director of football and manager of the team were in dispute. Not only in Newcastle, but Tottenham and Portsmouth when Zajec unsettled Redknapp. It don't work in England.
Keegan's appointment was a bit of a joke. Newcastle fans are so one dimensional. They only believe Keegan or Shearer should manage the club. Keegan walks away all the time when things get tough, but whats more funny is that he said he didn't want to come back to football as had other business interests going on. But Newcastle did a Papadopoulos on him and gave him the biggest contract ever. Even now when Newcastle are top of second division they still think they should appoint Shearer even though he get barely any managerial experience. I think Newcastle did same with Xisco. Keegan shouldn't get anything though cos he walked out.
Yeah Milan Badelj is Zvonimir Boban. hehe only kidding..
@ Ziva Istina - I never heard height mentioned as far as comparisons to Boksic go. Its the fact that both forwards have exceptional footwork for a forward. I will use the compliment of exceptional footwork very loosely, for Jelavic. I have not seen enough of him to shower him with such praise. I have followed Boksic since I was very young, he was my all time favorite Croatian player. The only player I can compare him to today would be Mirko Vucinic or to a lesser extent Wayne Rooney. Players that are willing to do some hard work in midfield and play comfortably with the ball at their feet. Neither needs to be set up for an easy goal like the classic poacher. Both can create their own opportunities or opportunities for their team mates. When healthy, Alen ran Italian and French defenses raged. Definitely was ahead of his time, he was a Hybrid between a striker and a midfielder.
Again, I use all those comparisons and praises very, very loosely with regards to Jelavic.
Ragged, sorry.
Ivan Rakitic sitting on the bench again today.
Watched the Schalke game this afternoon. Ivan Rakitic was key in Schalke getting the penalty. Perhaps it is enough for him to regain some faith with Magath.
what time did they put him into the game?
82nd minute.
Stupid Magath, doesn't he know what damage Rakitic could do? Is this the same kind of self-destructuctive mentality that Hertha's old mouth-breathing coach did to Simunic? I could go on but I digress.
well, in the coache's defense, its not like Rakitic has been lights out with his form this year.
Rakitic is a decent player and for him not to be a starter in schalke is kind of embarassing he needs to move on if he cant make first team there. He is only 21 and he has alot of potential im not saying he is top class or anything but there are many teams there are better then schalke who he could make the starting line up for and do a decent job. He is very good with ball and decent playmaker i never understood why bilic put madzu in over him vs england i was so mad
He has even less chance of being lights out on the bench. The coach is pretending to be oblivious or maybe he's just that naive.
I agree with you Andrej, he needs to move on if he's not even starting. Same with Pranjic, Klasnic, Kranjcar, Pletikosa (after he heals up), etc. Even if they take pay cuts, it's better than rotting on the bench.
The common denominator in all of the problems that Rakitic has had for the past 3 years has been Ivan. He has had 3 coaches now, every single one has had a problem with him. Maybe a move away and a change of scenery will do him some good. The kid clearly has a poor work ethic and attitude.
Magath wants to give a young Georgian guy named Kemia a chance. If we look at Schalkes league position we can hardly argue. Also just like at Spurs and Hajduk there seems no planning to the signings Schalke made. They had Asamoah who plays right side, Altintop plays right side, Farfan plays right side and Rakitic plays right side. You can't have like 4 first team players who all play on the same position. Magath is trying to bring balance to do the team and although that's not suiting Rakitic it is the best thing for Schalke cos there team was all over the place last year. Rakitic would fit perfectly at Hamburg. A winter transfer would be excellant. In contrast to Schalke Hamburg are short on right sided players. They have Pitriopa who works hard but is not Rakitic standard. Also they have Jarolim who is 32 now. With his friend Petric there as well, he'd fit perfectly in Hamburg. For the national team i don't think he should be dropped cos his output since Euro 2008 has still been high. He hasn't been at his best all games, but much of what has been scored so far has come through him.
I keep on hearing people mention that Rakitic is naturally right footed and that is where he belongs. Felix Magath is by far the best coach that Schalke has seen while Rakitic has been there. This is the 3rd straight coach, 4th overall (one was a caretaker manager when Slomka was fired) that has continued to use Ivan on the Left side. If we count Bilic, that also makes 5 managers. I have to wonder if they know something we dont. Danijel Prskalo is a young Croatian forward that was bought by Schalke in the summer. This guy was hand picked by Magath himself. He is out with their reserve team now, but, this may be the Croat that makes a lasting impression on that club.
Since when did anyone see Rakitic do anything with his left foot. He barely even uses it. I don't agree at all that he is always on left side. Yes he occasionally is on the left here and there, but that's where he's had all his worst games. When Raki was in his first season in Germany he was on the right. I used to watch Bundesliga each week in the first season and Raki was ever hardly on the left. Last season Schalke's team was a mess so can really discount the position Raki was playing. Everyone was all over the place. Bilic uses Raki on the left as he doesn't dare drop Dario Srna and cos Kranjcar has been injured or filling Modric's role. However coincidence maybe that when he had them all fit for once then he used Rakitic on the right wing in the first match against Belarus - and Rakitic in response flew down the right wing and set up Eduardo. If we play Rakitic on left wing he'll only come inside as he's right footed. He can't hit the left byline and cross with his left foot as that's usually impossible. If you constantly play right footers on left side then they always come inside. Kranjcar does it, but it don't matter regards Kranjcar cos he is playmaker rather than a winger anyway. Its rare Kranjcar every goes to the byline at all. Even if he was on the right he'd try to cut inside.
If we play Rakitic down the right wing we will get the best out of him. But when everyone is fit Rakitic will be on the bench anyway. Also if we regard Rakitic as a left wing then there is no room for Anas Sharbini. That means Drago Gabric should be in Croatia's squad ahead of Sharbini.
@vinko Mustapic,
Mario Galinovic is in the dog house at Panathinaikos. He was left on the bench again today in a 4-0 Panathinaikos win. For those of you interested in Greece, Rukavina came on in the 74th minute of play. Unless Runje goes down to injury, Runje is our man.
@Dinamofan
Yes, I would start Subasic against Qatar. If RUnje goes down, who starts for Croatia in a potential playoff? Two capless keepers or an againg and out of form Galinovic. Bring back Butina? haha
@ Slaven,
Thanks for the links.
@Petar Radman
"The common denominator in all of the problems that Rakitic has had for the past 3 years has been Ivan. He has had 3 coaches now, every single one has had a problem with him. Maybe a move away and a change of scenery will do him some good. The kid clearly has a poor work ethic and attitude."
This clearly summarizes the Ivan Rakitic soap opera. Everyone seams to blame the manager. However, like you said, Ivan went through three managers and all three rarely played him.
Maybe Ivan just likes picking up the checks and doesnt give a damn about playing. Something is going on behind closed doors that we don't know about.
A change of scenery would do wonders for the kid.
Petric is out for Kazakhstan. Consider Nikica Jelavic a starter as of right now.
By the way, Sunderland are eyeing Jelavic for transfer?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1218209/Sunderland-Rapid-Vienna-stars-Yasin-Pehlivan-Nikica-Jelavic.html
Quatar and Kazakhstan are good games to bring in a few new faces to the squad. I'd like to see Delac in goal as he should be our goalie of the future if Chelsea thinks he is worth something and see Jelavic start.
